Yep, there really is such a thing as a practical classic.

Holden HQ-WB V8

If you want a classic that's still practical for everyday use and might make you some money, consider an HZ Premier V8.

The wagon in particular is a great family drive with good cars at $20-25,000.

Less expensive for reasons unknown than the Premier is the bigger, better-equipped Statesman.

These came standard from 1975 with a V8, power windows, air-conditioning and sometimes leather trim. HQs with factory-fitted Chevrolet 350 engines are scarce and now cost $50K+ but check authenticity.

Other Holdens of this age can have later-model 5.7-litre or larger engines, resulting in some silly asking prices for modified cars.

When buying for the longer term, authentic is best.

HQ-HZ V8 Sedan/Wagon $26,440 [10]

HQ-HZ Premier V8 $22,185 [14]

HQ SS $39,750 [2]

Statesman HQ-HZ $18,985 [18]

Statesman HQ350 $67,495 [2]

Statesman WB $14,760 [28]
