Grays’ latest online auction came to a close last night, and saw a huge variety of cars finding loving new homes.
The headline of the auction was the Holden HT GTS Monaro that Peter Brock drove in his 1969 Bathurst debut, finishing third with team-mate Des West, behind the sister car in first, driven by Colin Bond and Tony Roberts. Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland were sandwiched between them in a Ford GT-HO.
The final 12 hours saw the price inflate from a stagnated high-bid of around $380,000, to an ultimate selling price of $455,209 by auction’s end.
It’s an extremely important car for Brock fans, completely unique and irreplaceable. Amongst those of us in the office, it was virtually impossible to agree on what we thought it would go for.
Our most recent value guide (Issue #422) pegged an excellent-condition HT GTS350 at a median value of $235,000; but the sky seemed to be the limit once you add in the Brock connection and genuine Bathurst race history.
If you’d like to know more about the car, watch our searching interview with former Holden competition boss Joe Felice.
The second highest-achiever at last night’s auction was a Calypso Green numbers-correct 1972 Ford Falcon XA GT: fetching a healthy $160,009.
In the mid-range, the buyers of a handsome 1969 Ford ZB Fairlane 500 and a manual XB Falcon 500 should be jumping for joy, selling for just $16,209 and $11,309 respectively.
A pair of desirable late-model Benzes were taken home for a relative bargain, against wider market value. The first was an Australian-delivered R129 Mercedes-Benz SL500 with just 89,455kms, selling for $25,509; and a modern muscular 2009 W204 Mercedes-AMG C63 selling for $26,709.
