Brand new Porsche 993 Turbo sells for AUD$4.3m

Porsche built a new car from 1995, and it sold for eye-watering amounts

Until this year, the last time a Porsche 993 Turbo rolled out of the factory was back in 1998.

It’s no secret that aircooled Porsches are one of the highest yielding investments these days (and that’s not even limited to cars), and the 993 – being the last of the breed –is one of the biggest cash-cows in the paddock.

Porsche, in celebration of their 70 year anniversary (and maybe also a way of cutting their own slice of the classic car cash cake), built a brand new car in order to showcase their factory restoration capabilities of Porsche Classic, as well as their bespoke customisation and personalisation abilities from the Porsche Exclusiv Manufaktur department.

Beginning with a new-old-stock body shell, and built by the factory over the course of a year and a half; the 2018-stamped car from 1998 went under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s 70 Years of Porsche sale, and sold for a whopping AUD$4.3 million dollars.

When new, the 993 Turbo was the first 911 Turbo with 4WD – lifted from the otherworldly 959 supercar. It was also one of the first production cars fitted with the OBDII diagnostics system.

993 Turbos are amongst the most desired models in the 993 range, with standard secondhand examples fetching upwards of $300,000.

The car was given a new Vin number, and a 2018 build date; though due to being built to exacting 1997 specifications, modern day crash and emissions regulations render this car unable to be legally driven on the road.

AUD$4.3 million dollars for an otherwise standard late-90s car is near impossible to make sense of, but with the unprecedented explosion in popularity and desirability, this one-off brand new Porsche is near impossible to value.

The car reportedly took 427,000 man hours to complete, with the proceeds of the sale going to the Ferry Porsche Foundation.

We’re sure the new owner must be happy with their purchase, but if we were playing in that space – we’d like to say we would rather have stretched the budget a little bit, and taken home the Paris-Dakar Porsche 959, which sold in the same auction for AUD$7.6 million.
