BMW 3.0 Si 1973 – today’s budget tempter

Mid-sized Bimmer was a Benz competitor

Here’s living proof there are still some sharp buys out there in classic car land.

This 3.0lt BMW runs one of several variants of the straight six M30 powerplant, which also featured in the now very desirable 3.0 CS coupes and later E24 six series, such as the 635.

In BMW-speak, this is an E3, produced from 1966 through to 1970. In this guise it was said to be a little quicker than the now expensive E9 coupe because it had the same power but was a little lighter.

Two generations of Bosch fuel injection were offered and, depending on which you had, engine output was claimed at 195 or 200hp.

Road testers of the day were highly complimentary of the car, pointing to its good handling and lively performance.

It had independant suspension all round and disc brakes – then an uncommon feature outside upper echelon European cars.

This example is a four-speed manual and comes with a RWC. It’s in SA and is priced at $7000.
