Long way from home: One of six ever built in RHD, and the only Australian-delivered example in the world
We’ve spotted another rare Aussie that’s found itself a long way from home: although German by birth, this 1974 Porsche 911 3.0 RS is an extremely rare vehicle regardless of being the only Australian-delivered example of its kind.
It’s up for sale in the UK, on offer for an undisclosed price by noted classic Porsche specialist, Maxted Page.
A global total of 54 Carrera 3.0 RS’ were produced in order to homologate the Group 4 3.0 RSR racecar.
The 3.0 RS was a road-legal racer, fitted with a 2933cc type 911/77 engine which was equally as suitable for Group 3 competition as it was for spirited drives on British back roads.
Similarly with the original Carrera 2.7 RS, the evolutionary 3.0lt RS also boasted considerable weight savings thanks to fibreglass bumpers, bonnet and rear deck lid; a stripped-down interior and a body built out of thin-gauge steel.
Widened metal guards from factory swallowed 9-inch Fuchs wheels at the front, and a massive 14-inch wide rear for circuit use; with each wheel cornered by Porsche 917 brakes as standard.
Widely regarded as one of the most desirable 1970s 911s of all; the sole Australian-delivered example finds itself in an even more exclusive pool as just six right-hand drive 3.0 RS’ ever left the factory.
Five were delivered to the UK, and this Grand Prix White-over-black example was the sole example secured by Mr. Alan Hamilton himself.
Mr. Hamilton received the vehicle on August 1 1974 and owned the vehicle for many years until the early 90s after which the vehicle has been in the hands of four further owners.
The Australian RS remained in its homeland until recently, and represents a rare opportunity to purchase one of the few rare right-hook examples of its kind. It’s logged 55,000 miles and presents in great condition free of significant corrosion thanks to a warm Australian climate.
All six RHD 3.0 RS’ survive today, and are tightly held in long-term private collections in the UK.
Representing the highest-echelon of the effervescent classic Porsche boom; this rare 70s racing homologation special rarely comes to market, and subsequently doesn’t come cheap.
The car is listed by Maxted Page as POA: but a less-rare left-hand drive example sold at RM Sotheby’s 2017 Amelia Island auction for an absolutely eye-watering AU$2.076 million dollars!
It’s a shame to see such a special car leave our homeland, but the European market likely offers a far wider market of potential buyers. This car was last seen for sale at Melbourne’s Dutton Garage, and we hope to one day see it return home.
Unfortunately though, that appears to be a multi-million dollar exercise.
