Aussie manufacturing ambition spurs Brock Collection sale

Champion Collection being auctioned with big ambitions for the nation's manufacturing industry

Queensland businessman Peter Champion is putting his prized collection of the late Peter Brock’s race cars up for auction at Bathurst later this year, in what is described as “a bid to reignite vehicle manufacturing in Australia”.

Champion, who owns the HDT Special Vehicles business, has taken many years to amass the collection of 25-plus cars, which until recently was on display at Dreamworld on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Many of Brock’s most famous Holdens, spanning his career from the early Monaro and Torana GTR XU-1 days to his Targa Tasmania Holden Monaro CV8, from the early 2000s, will go under the hammer.

The centrepiece, to be auctioned by Lloyds of Queensland, is Brock’s 1984 Group C Commodore known as ‘the last of the big bangers’ where the team scored a famous 1-2 victory at Mt Panorama.

Others include Brock’s first Bathurst mount, a GTS 350 Monaro from 1969 in which he finished third; his first Bathurst winner, the 1972 LJ Torana GTR XU-1; plus several V8-powered L34 and A9X Toranas, and a full spread of Commodores from the 80s and 90s.

“I am honoured to be a part of this once in a lifetime event and the idea that this iconic collection of Peter Brock’s cars can continue his legacy by reigniting car manufacturing in Australia after Holden’s closure in 2017,” said Champion.

Exactly what the ‘reigniting’ involves is unclear at this stage, though you would imagine it’s tied in with the HDT Special Vehicles brand.

HDT Special Vehicles has been supplying upgrades to Holden owners for some years and has even built whole late-model cars to order.
