Aston Martin DB5 + Ford GT + BMW M3 CSL + Mercedes-Benz SL 500 – Auction Action 415

Highlights from recent car auctions around the world...

1964 Aston Martin DB5 sports saloon

Sold: $1.2M
Bonhams

The Aston Martin DB5 is James Bond’s signature car and finding one in such superb condition with known history and one family ownership from new to 2005, is harder than defeating Spectre. It was delivered to its original owner on June 11, 1964. Powered by a 4-litre straight six, fed by triple SU carbs and a four-speed ZF manual gearbox, it sat on spoked wheels wrapped in Dunlop tyres that hid its disc brakes. Only 1021 DB5s were made and this one, in Sierra Blue, spent most of its early life being enjoyed by its owner on the Isle of Man.

2017 Ford GT

Sold: $2.4M
Mecum, Indy

Ford -gt

Penned by Tasmanian Todd Willing, like its spiritual grandfather, the GT40, this GT has also won LeMans. Although there is no bent eight roaring behind your head, the twin intercooled turbos bolted to its 3.5-litre V6 engine gets it to the ton in 3 seconds and on to a top speed of 350km/h. Impressive. Even more impressive is its price escalation from $530,000 when new on a Ford showroom. This silver stunner, No. 48 of 250 made in 2017, has travelled just 11 kilometres.

1966 Mercedes-Benz SL 500

Sold: $35,500
Shannons, Sydney

Mercedes -benz -sl -500

Hands up those who think you have to spend a fortune to motor about in topless uxury? This beaut looking 1996 SL500 Benz convertible was bought for the price of a Mazda MX5, dispelling that myth. When new it was roughly $300 grand and this V8-powered Benz with the sawn-off roof, was considered the epitome of open air luxo motoring. Full of tech including a world-first pop-up rollbar and powered folding soft top, this Australian delivered car has 98,198km. showing. It’s a hell of a car.

2003 BMW M3 CSL coupe

Sold: $120,000
Shannons Sydney

Bmw -m 3-csl

One of just 27 E46 CSL M3s sold new in Australia, this third-gen M3 was the last of the series with an in-line six. Its 3.2-litres belt out a tyre-smoking 252kW. BMW M3s are appreciating rapidly and sitting at the top of the tree is the CSL with its bigger wheel arches, rear spoiler, and unique bumpers. Underneath lie gas-filled shocks, bigger coil springs and larger anti roll-bars. Desirable and collectible and well worth the price.

1970 Morris Mini Cooper S Mk II

Sold: $50,000
Shannons, Sydney

Mini -cooper

What a beauty! Alec Issigonis created the Mini and John Cooper made it lustworthy. They don’t come much better than this Australian assembled stunner in signature Connaught Green with a white roof. It lived in a shed from 1996 to 2004 when its present owner invested $30,000 and countless hours giving it a full nut and bolt rotisserie resto. The mechanicals were also totally refurbished, but the seats and door cards are original.
