DB4 GT Zagato Continuation extends Zagato lineage into centenary year
It’s quite a milestone for any manufacturer to reach 100 years of life, with the likes of Ferrari and Porsche only recently blowing out the candles to their 70 year anniversaries.
In celebration of Zagato’s centenary, Aston Martin was enlisted to produce 19 pairs of brand-new, old Zagato specials; comprising of the track-only DB4 GT Zagato, and a road-legal DBS GT Zagato. The pair of cars, dubbed the ‘DBZ Centenary Collection’, set buyer’s back roughly AU$10.9 million with global deliveries set to commence fourth quarter of 2019.
Well at the 2019 Le Mans 24hr last weekend, the very first of 19 track-only DB4 GTs broke cover, representing over 4,500 man hours of painstaking artisan craftsmanship.
This isn’t Aston Martin’s first go at building new old cars; with two ‘continuation’ vehicles already under their belt; with 25 DB4 GTs stamped with 2017 build dates, and the impending 25 new ‘Goldfinger’ DB5s that will come to market in 2020.
As with all of Aston’s ‘Continuation’ cars, it was hand-built within Aston Martin’s Heritage Division in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire.
It’s finished beautifully in Rosso Maja red, matched to the original masters created by the original paint suppliers, Max Meyer & ICI. Inside, the interior is trimmed in Obsidian Black leather covering carbon fibre race seats; door cards, headliner and rear environment. Black Wilton carpets bound in matching black leather cover the floor.
Under the bonnet sits a larger capacity 4.7lt straight-six lifted from 2017’s DB4 GT Continuation. In this specification, the car produces in excess of 290kW sent to the back wheels via a four-speed manual and limited-slip differential.
The car is finished with Continuation-specific instruments and a full FIA-approced roll cage, topped off by Borrani wheels with silver painted faces and polished lips.
Originally just 19 DB4 Zagatos were built, intended to race against the larger-than-life Ferrari throughout the 60s.
The 2019 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato is meticulously crafted to the highest possible quality, staying true to the original cars while also sympathetically blending modern engineering advancements.
If you’ve forked out the AU$10+ million for your DBZ Centenary Collection; deliveries for the DB4 GT Zagato are slated for QTR 3 2019, with the street-legal DBS GT Zagato set for QTR 4 2020.
