Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0 – Todays Tempter

Appears to be a South African-delivered 3.0lt GTV6 – the only RHD market in the world to gain the ‘big’ V6 engine

The cult classic Alfa Romeo GT (also known as the Alfetta GT and Sprint Veloce) was released in 1974 and was designed by Giorgetto Guigaro, and solely available as a sporty two-door fastback coupe.

Initially, throughout the 70s, the GT was available with a range of small inline-fours of 1.8lt and 2.0lt displacement.

1980 saw the birth of the GTV6 in Australia, which came with a larger 2.5lt V6 engine as well as a stronger differential, gearbox and driveshafts.

The 2.5 was as big a motor as Australia – and the rest of the world – ever got, but the South African market uniquely produced around 200 3.0lt GTV6s for endurance racing homologation. At the time, the GTV6 3.0 was claimed to be the most powerful production sports car ever built by the marque.

As an RHD market, a handful of those South African 3.0s have emigrated to Australia over the years, and this is one of them.

Said to be well maintained and in beautiful running condition, this appears to be a South African-delivered 3.0lt example, a configuration never sold in Australia.

The listing states that the car has always been garaged and bears no rust. The listing also indicates that the GTV6 hasn’t really been used over the last 10 years, although it was recently driven from Sydney to the Gold Coast without incident.

Some spares will also accompany the sale, including a brand-new water pump and spare carburettors. The owner indicates that the car could use a respray and new carpets some time in the future, although from the photos – the car appears to be intact and in clean condition.

It’s certainly a car for the Alfa enthusiast!

The 3.0lt GTV6 is based in Queensland and is listed for $65,000.
