POSTPONED: Adelaide Auto Expo slated for January 2021

Along with the expo's highly-anticipated 'shed find auction'!

UPDATE November 2020: Due to a recent outbreak and border closure in South Australia, the highly-anticipated Adelaide Auto Expo has unfortunately been postponed until January 29 and January 30 2021.

Organiser Geof Tartoosie stated: “In the interest of everybody’s health and wellbeing I have decided to postpone the 2020 Adeliaide Auto Expo”

“We had a big go at getting the event across the line for this weekend but at the end of the day, people’s health… is more important”.

ORIGINAL STORY: The 2020 Adelaide Auto Expo takes place from November 20-21 at the Wayville Showgrounds, and will play host to an automotive extravaganza with various dedicated displays for classics, hot rods, customs and new cars – with two big cruises and a sizeable trader alley to boot.

Also back by popular demand is their dedicated ‘shed find’ auction, set to take place on the Saturday afternoon.

A fleet of ten vehicles that have been found in sheds and garages all around the country will be up for grabs. All interesting models with reasonable reserves, meaning any one of them could be the perfect starting point for your next project.

The VG Valiant coupe is one of the latest cars to be announced by the Adelaide Auto Expo, and will surely appeal.

Parked in a suburban Adelaide carport ten years ago, the Valiant became part of the daily commute for the resident flock of chickens, as the coupe sat between their coop and the open grass area. Fitted with the 245 ‘Hemi’ six-cylinder and three-speed auto, the Valiant is amazingly complete and will require a full restoration but is intact and rolling.

With the values and increased desire for local Mopar coupes, this one could be worth it all in the end.

Another recent entry is an unusual Ford MkII Cortina 440, which was destined for the crusher before the current owner identified its low-mileage and very complete condition and saved it with just moments to spare. Having lodged at the car yard for some time, the Cortina shows a number of dents that should easily pop back out.

The maroon interior is complete and in pretty good nick. Importantly, the 1.6lt Kent four-cylinder and four-speed and original down to the generator, and shows no rust in the notoriously prone lower plenum area. The Cortina will require a full restoration and presents complete and rolling.

For a minor project, there is this fantastic time-capsule GN GL Mistubishi Sigma. Specified with the 2.6lt Astron II (with an auto), the Sigma had a replacement engine fitted in 2003 at 154,333kms travelled. Today it shows 216,077kms travelled and is said to drive like a new car. The Sigma has lived with the same original family owners since new, and is now in the hands of a third generation.

On the other end of the spectrum, there is this Holden 48-215 that was discovered in an Adelaide shed, where it had been sitting for the last ten years. With known history, the early humpy Holden is quite well-travelled having started life off in Melbourne, then ending up in Coober Pedy, and then later in Pt Augusta where a panel beater acquired the car and tore it down to begin restorations.

Today, the 48-215 presents running and driving and with rebuilt brakes. It is deemed ‘complete’ albeit in a disassembled state with rust repairs already underway. The driveline however, is still fitted. The car will require a full restoration.

Another lot that will no doubt face fierce interest, is this 1983 VH Commodore SLE with a 253ci V8. The VH SLE began life as a country family car around Mt Gambier in South Australia. Finished in Alabastar White over Carbernet Red interior, the VH was fitted with a reconditioned motor in 2002, before it was sold and then parked behind a South Australian shed. 18 years later, it has recently been rescued with a straight body and logbooks safely stored in the glovebox.

The VH has had a mild service and a tune-up, with brittle hoses replaced and a full fluid change. Today, the VH presents complete and in rolling and running condition. Mild restoration required.

Elsewhere in the auction, there is a fantastic survivor-grade XM Falcon Deluxe discovered on a hoist in Northern Adelaide. With great paintwork and an immaculately preserved interior, this one should require little work to return to the road presenting in a complete and running state (although no brakes).

If you’re on the lookout for your next project – be sure to take a look at the Adelaide Auto Expo’s barn find auction, taking place on Saturday November 21.

The Expo itself opens 5:00pm on Friday, November 20. See more details at the Expo website here!
