’73 Fairmont, 77′ Torana, 68′ Camaro – Phil’s Picks

Phil's Picks

Uncle Phil has been out searching for classics and collectables for you, despite the lousy weather. Here’s what he has found.

1973 FORD FAIRMONT XA GS – $120,000

Hardtop Falcons would have to be an all-time Aussie favourite, and this example is just spectacular.

Is this the ultimate Aussie paint colour scheme or one that needs time to get used to? Either way you won’t miss this XA GS hardtop and you’re never gonna misplace it.

It has undergone a full resto, including the Tropicana green and gold paint, and the owner has photographed all the nooks and crannies so you can see what you are getting.

It also has factory air neatly integrated in the coupe’s sculptured dash. These hardtops are getting harder to find and drive really well for their age.

The 302 V8 with an auto combo is one of the best, the five-litre Henry sounding the goods too when you give it the beans.

With restos getting more expensive by the day, do your sums. A project car that needs a body tidy up alone could cost more than this turnkey restored beauty.

1977 HOLDEN TORANA LX – $119,990

I once had an immaculate Pastel Blue A9X hatchback tribute in the shed and I do regret selling it. It was great to drive and even today looks absolutely fabulous. This hatchback appears to be in fine fettle and has been upgraded with a swag of SS options and a hefty 308 V8 with a Turbo 400 behind it, making it an even tastier proposition. And I have to say I can’t remember the last time I saw an engine bay so clean and tidy as this one. The mods done aren’t over the top and while subtle, give the Torana a decent boost. And it looks the part on its hotwires too. The heart strings are pulling again, maybe I could find some space.

1968 CHEVROLET CAMARO RS – $79,000

While the blue corner has the iconic Mustang, the red corner muscle car of the 1960s was the Camaro. Over the years I have done a thing or two with these ultimate GM muscle cars, having bought and supervised the restoration of a 1968 and ’69 models that were given away as promotions through Unique Cars. I also remember Norm Beechey and others racing them in the good old days. This RS version caught my eye due to its rarity and stunning paint combo of Rallye Green with the white vinyl roof and matching white trim along with its 327ci V8 and auto trans combo. It is ready and priced with shipping to Australia.

1965 JAGUAR E-TYPE S1 – $159,000

Even the Commendatore himself, Enzo Ferrari, once said: “The E-Type Jaguar was the most beautiful car ever made.” Who can argue with that! No one can deny that the E-Type is a special car and this Australian-delivered, matching-numbers Series 1 fixed-head coupe looks spectacular in cream, with contrasting red interior trim. The E-Type was the car to have and was driven by movie and music stars the world over. This coupe has the larger 4.2lt straight-six, introduced in 1964 along with the introduction of an all-synchro gearbox, uprated brake booster and more luxurious seats for a far better driving experience.

1972 PEUGEOT 504 – $39,000

Have you ever seen one of these in Australia? They’re rarer than the proverbial hen’s teeth. Over the years Italian styling house Pininfarina had input in some fine automotives including the Pug 504 cabriolet. Like the 504 sedan I bet this one, with a 2lt fuel injected four and manual ’box won’t be fast, but it sure will be comfortable and dependable. I best describe this car as original with the body in good condition and the engine and brakes recently refurbished. It will turn heads thanks to being unknown here and if you don’t want to be stared at all the time, it does come with a custom made tonneau.
