$450k for Ferrari Dino at Shannons Auction

Solid rather than crazy prices on local hero cars

Last night’s Shannons auction in Sydney confirmed the local market has settled into some sort of pattern with a high sell-through rate and strong rather than crazy prices on local cars. However premium models still commanded big money.

The top lot, a 1972 Ferrari 246GT Dino, sold for $450,000.

Chrome bumper Falcons were halfway affordable, with a 1971 XY Falcon 500 going for $32,000 and an interesting 1978 XC Redback dealer special (a V8 GS Rally pack) going for $36,000.

Hero models are still commanding big money, with a 1970 Ford XW GT pulling $89,000  and a 1972 Chrysler Charger VH 770 going for a winning bid of $71,000.

In one of life’s little ironies, there were some stark choices in the Euro fleet. A 1962 Autobianchi Bianchina Transformabile (running Fiat 500 mechanicals) went for $32,000, while just $2000 more would have got you a 1994 Mercedes-Benz 500SL convertible.

There was a fair smattering of motorcycles on offer, with the hero lot being a 1989 Honda RC30 that went for $50,000.

As is often the case, it was numberplates that were commanding the really big money. NSW plate ‘42’ went for $755,000.
