Dodge & Ford
Grays’ current auction has something for fans of 1940s style: a Dodge convertible and Ford coupe.
The Dodge is a 1948 Deluxe Fluid Drive. That means it runs a three-on-the-tree transmission, but has a fluid coupling in the drive train. It enables the driver to stop and take off with out using the clutch, however the latter needs to be used to change gear.
It’s running a 3.8lt straight flathead six, which should be more than enough to push it along at a decent pace. And, by the way, that’s a powered roof.
The Dodge is also said to have made an appearance in the Elvis film currently being shot in Australia by Baz Luhrmann.
Meanwhile the 1946 Ford is a Super Deluxe, running the factory’s legendary 4.2lt flathead V8. It too is running a three-speed transmission, but with a conventional drive. It does however have a Columbia two-speed rear axle, which is rare in Australia and very desirable.
Inside, both cars have some art deco influences, particularly the Dodge. Both, typically for the period, have a giant analogue clock facing the passenger.
It looks like neither car will cost a fortune, with bidding closing tonight.
