2020 Audi RS6 Avant Quattro review – Toybox

Purposeful and versatile wagon packs a Porsche-beating punch

It has five seats, five doors, is ferociously fast and fabulous. That sums up the latest Audi RS6 Avant 4.0 TFSI Quattro.

Zero to 100km/h takes 3.6 seconds.

That’s faster than the latest Porsche 911 Carrera.

Top speed is 305 km/h.

Yes, you read that correctly. Its not a misprint.

Refined and muscular from any angle

Firing this superwagon into the next galaxy in a blink of an eye is a ballistic twin-turbo 4-litre V8 bolted to an eight-speed auto transmission, with quattro all-wheel drive, sending 441 kilowatts and 800 newton metres through to the road.

However, these super impressive numbers come at a price, $216,000 to be exact and this one had a further $47,500 of options thrown at it.

In Tango Red its looks more than match its performance, with a wide ground-hugging stance, 22-inch wheels that fill the puffed-out guards, a low ride height and lashings of carbon fibre on show. The rear is dominated by fighter jet size exhausts and a diffuser that looks as if it has been nicked from one of the brands LeMans winners.

Inside it’s luxurious and sumptuous with a combination of soft touch leather and Alcantara throughout and so well insulated you can whisper to those on board. Both rows have plenty of space and the cargo area is big enough to take home the results of a spending spree at Bunnings or anywhere else that takes your fancy.

The modern dash wears no switches or buttons for a clean look. Hitting the start button lights up the infotainment and HVAC central screens and the wonderful, customisable Audi Virtual Cockpit.

And despite its stratospheric performance and wild looks its quality, comfort and refinement are exemplary, as you’d expect from the four-ring brand.

There are several drive modes to play with allowing the power delivery, ride, handling, gearshifts and steering to be as supple or brutal as you wish. Lurking just under the surface is a brace of driver assist and safety tech to sort you out if enthusiasm outguns talent and to simply make driving less stressful.

I pootled around town in Comfort for most of the time but couldn’t help myself and tried both RS modes when having a crack on some open roads to make it feel and act like a race car.

A gentle brush of the throttle throws the horizon in your lap and the huge carbon ceramic brakes make your ears almost join at the front of your face. The well-weighted electric-assisted steering is pin-sharp and the air suspension almost impervious to road blemishes.

The Audi RS6 Avant Quattro is breathtakingly complete – five seats, five doors and fabulous.

A supercar in every sense. Yes, thanks…
