Depreciation is the bane of sellers, but can be the treasure of buyers
Depreciation is part and parcel of car ownership unfortunately.
While sellers take the brunt of it, especially in new cars, secondhand buyers can save some serious coin if they’re willing to wait for their dream car to dip in price.
Given the rate of technology, updates and model lifecycles; there lies a sweet spot where semi-modern sports cars can be had for an absolute steal against their original sticker price. They’re also not old enough yet to be considered classic, or possess any nostalgic provenance where they catch the upward wave.
Think of popular sports Euros around ten years old. The BMW E92 M3, the W204 C63. All can be had for a relative steal from when they were new, and more so against their current equivalent offerings.
In a world of ever-tightening emissions and design regulations; in a few more years, we’ll look back on these cars with rose-tinted lenses and love them for their simplicity and their naturally aspirated bent-eights. And as younger generations grow older, and gain the means to buy recreational cars – these things will likely appreciate once retrospective nostalgia takes hold.
The V8 Vantage is another car down in the dumps currently, but with plenty of room for uptake in the next decade. Equivalent V8 Aston’s from the 80s are already in the $200,000 range, so if you’re willing to let this 2007 Vantage stew for a bit longer, you could be on to a winner.
Produced from 2005 all the way up to 2017, the Vantage was Aston’s most lithe and agile offering, tasked with taking on the fabled Porsche 911. It cost north of AUD$250,000 when new. This car here can be had for $89,990, almost a third of its original price.
With a front-mid mounted four-valves per cylinder 4.3lt quad-cam V8 capable of 283kW (before 2008 update models), the baby Aston Grand Tourer is a capable sports car, arguably more so than it’s longer and larger flagship DB cars of the time.
This Meteor Grey car has travelled 81065kms in its 11 years of life, and is lacking nothing from modern cars of today.
