2002 AMG SL55 – today’s tempter

Benz muscle

We often point out that, when it comes to bang for your buck, it’s pretty hard to beat high-end Euro cars. This Benz-based AMG SL55 would be as good an example as any.

The seller says: “The R230 is arguably the last Mercedes to be built by engineers not accountants, testimony to the high quality Mercedes craftmanship. Make no mistake this is a formidable automobile. The factory specs are 493 horsepower at 6100rpm, 516 pound-feet of torque manifesting itself along a wonderfully flat curve from 2650 to 4500rpm. It was the quickest factory Benz ever tested up to the time.”

That lot is from a 5.4lt V8 with auto.

Long-term, SLs do reasonably well as collector cars and well-kept AMG variants should do okay, given their relative rarity.

This example is with Pennant Hills Auto at $89,990.
