Supercharged Brit
Big, fast and luxurious pretty much sums up the XJR of the mid-nineties, the maker’s first supercharged production car.
Seriously quick for a fairly heavy sedan (some 1800kg), it was powered by a 4.0lt straight six sunning a supercharger and claiming in the region of 240kW. That was fed through a four-speed GM auto.
Road tests of the day complimented the car for its speed and handling, while it was a little less generous for cabin space than direct competitors from Benz and BMW.
That said, it was a decent choice for fans of British cars and far more attainable than high-end makes such as Aston Martin. Plus, it followed on (and still bore a remarkable resemblance) from an incredible lineage that started with the first XJ6 in the late sixties.
As we note in a story on the XJ6: “Even now, years after it ceased production, the Jaguar XJ6 rates as a truly elegant-looking car, somehow defying the normal design logic of a four-door saloon.”
This XJR has a relatively modest 150,000km on the odo and claims to be a one-owner car.
It’s with John Conroy in Brisbane, priced at $59,950.
