Young Aussie backpacker seeking new home in sunny California
The ute is proudly, and uniquely, Australian.
But one well-travelled Aussie has found itself a long way from home as this 1994 VR Commodore ute is currently listed for sale in the US, at California-based Top Rank Importers.
It’s listed for US$17,499, or AU$26,029 in down-under dollars.

The VR is dressed up as a Maloo, but is not a genuine one. It’s fitted with the 5.0lt V8 and five-speed manual. It’s immaculately presented, despite having covered 194,638 kilometres.
It certainly sticks out amongst the dealership’s inventory chock-full of newly-legal turbo Nissan Skylines and Silvias; but America’s notorious 25-year rule regarding eligible vehicle importation also allows for Aussie classics built up to 1995 able to be brought in to the country.
This isn’t the first well-travelled Aussie we’ve spied for sale in the US, having previously spotted a 1973 HQ Kingswood ute for sale in Las Vegas, as well as a pair of FJs in Washington State!
We’d be curious as to whether the VR ute was imported by customer request, or perhaps Top Rank is testing the market for foreign Aussie utilities in America.
It’s a lot for a VR ute, but it would certainly be unique on American roads. Perhaps we have some American readers, or Aussie expats over there that might be interested in giving this young Aussie backpacker a home.
