1991 Nissan Figaro – today’s tempter

Prospective buyers had to enter a lottery to purchase a Figaro.

It’s not every day you trip over one of these: A 1991 Nissan Figaro that has recently been put up for sale. If you’re not familiar with the Figaro, well, we don’t blame you. Only 20,000 units were ever produced, and it was only ever sold in Japan.

Here’s a bit of history: In 1989, at the Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan pulled the covers off four concept cars, all under the heading of Back to the Future. All four were based on the brands K10 Nissan Micra and featured eccentric retro styling. The line-up included the Nissan Be-1, the Nissan S-Cargo and the Nissan Pao.

The fourth, and the most popular of the bunch, the Nissan Figaro, was a small two-seater coupe that was designed to pay homage to the Nissan Fairlady from the early 60s. The car was sold out within weeks, well before any had actually been built.

Although the car was made to represent its classic ancestors, the Figaro was given plenty of high-end creature comforts for the time. Leather seats, air conditioning, CD player and a convertible roof were all standard.

Like all models, this NSW Figaro is home to a 987cc turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is paired with a three-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels.

The car has done just over 86,000 kilometres and is painted in its original Emerald Green. The seller is asking $18,888, which is somewhere in the middle of the Figaros current pricing spectrum.  If you’re after a classic roadster experience, without the old-car hassles, then this car might just be for you.
