1991 Ford Capri – Reader Ride

Forgotten and under-appreciated? Maybe, but this Capri has made its owner very happy

Well done Unique Cars, you’re evil plan has worked! After many years of buying the mag and reading and drooling, I finally weakened. With a windfall from last year, I got myself a classic car in February.

To enable getting it past the Minister for War & Finance, it had to be a convertible (not a bad thing!), had to be a four-seater for grandkid cruisin’ (hmm, bit trickier), within budget (being the actual amount of the windfall without impacting on daily finances) and Australian for accessible parts.

Well that pretty much narrowed it down to an 89-94 Ford Capri.

It took me about three months of looking and I picked up a little gem of a 1991 model with a 1.6 injected DOHC that had been lovingly cared for by the previous owner to the guy I bought it off. Renewed upholstery, suspension, upgraded discs, alarm, remote boot lock, radio etcetera and it runs like a Swiss watch.

The local Capri Car Club was great and I had her on Vic club plates within a couple of weeks, saving considerable dosh on the rego.

These cars were never as loved here as they were in the US, their target market, which was a shame as they were a great little unit. That Mazda turbo donk just goes and goes.

And nobody told me that buying the car was only the beginning! There are all the bits you have to get to make it unique. Thankfully there is the Book of Face that has connected me to owners nationwide and already unicorn parts have been received from interstate to satisfy my new addiction. But it doesn’t end there, does it…
