Summer’s coming! After a cheap convertible? Try this early Golf cab on for size!

Imagine the year is 1990: You hop into your brand new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet to go see Goodfellas – the best new movie out- at the cinemas.  MC Hammer’s “Can’t touch this” is on the radio, and you’re probably wearing still wearing a fluoro parachute jacket…

The 90s is well and truly back in vogue – and if it’s this era that evokes your nostalgia, then this Mk1 Golf Cabriolet might be the car for you!

While it wears the face of the later MkII Golf, the original Cabriolet was based off the ‘Rabbit’ generation’s MkI platform; and remained on the market, overlapping, both generations from 1980 to 1993.

In losing its fixed roof, the cabriolet gained various body reinforcements, a transverse roll-over bar and was packaged in high-spec trim levels compared to the larger mainstream Golf range. They even received the GTI’s larger 1.8lt motor.

This 1990 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet is specified with the five-speed manual and offers some cheap classic convertible fun as the weather starts to heat up.

It’s in running condition (currently used on club reg), and is described as “straight and clean” and in standard specification.

The seller states that there is usual wear and tear for a car of this age – with some identifiable minor paint chipping on the right corner of the plastic rear bumper, and a couple of stone chips on the front bumper.

However, the seller states that the car is completely free of rust and in fair overall condition. It has been serviced and maintained to original standards throughout the seller’s ownership. They also point out that; while the roof is electric, the seller currently operates it manually (not stated whether anything is malfunctioning).

Overall, the car looks to be in fair to good condition, with the exterior paint presenting well in photos (aside from the small aforementioned paint chips), and the interior trim looks very good and free of noticeable wear and tear.

It’s completely unrestored and exceedingly original, and offers a cheap and cheerful summer cruiser and a great base for a minor resto.

It’s got 200,000kms on the clock, and is listed for just $4,995.

The car is based in Victoria, and you can check out the full listing here!
