Near-extinct 90s Nissan compact: comes with three original hatches!
Here’s something you don’t see every day! These Nissan EXAs must surely be on the endangered species list, but they were fairly prolific in their day.
The original EXA burst on to the Australian market amidst the 80s and found favour with many buyers who were taken by its fairly quick athleticism (bear in mind the Australian market was recovering from late-70s performance-choking anti-emissions legislation).
This N13 Generation arrived in 1986 and survived for two Series up until 1989. They were fairly well-specified with power steering, front disc brakes but originally arrived with a fairly lethargic 1.6lt SOHC CA16 inline-four.
The Series II update gained the larger 1.8lt DOHC CA18DE that also appeared in the S13 Silvia of the same vintage.
Of course, that’s not why you’re here. The EXA’s real party trick was its modular rear hatch!
Along with its T-top roof, the car could be converted into an open-air targa with the rear hatch removed, or a conventional liftback; or a more practical (at least by appearance’s sake) shooting brake!
And we’re happy to report that the impossibly clean N13 EXA on sale here comes with all original hatches including the “SportBak” shooting brake canopy and “SoftBak” canvas top!
It bears the twin cam 1.8lt CA18 coupled to a five-speed manual, and presents as best as a 90s EXA could, with just 121,000kms travelled and with full books provided.
It comes from just its second owner and still wears its original paint and looks virtually like-new!
It might not be for everyone, but for those that love that quirky 90s optimistic futurism; you’d be hard-pressed to find a more quaint car!
The EXA is based in Victoria, and is listed for $14,500.
