1989 Porsche 964 Carrera 4 – today’s tempter

AWD rocket

For Porsche to make a move towards all-wheel-drive may once have been unthinkable, but to most people who drove the result it made all kinds of sense.

The Porsche Club in the UK thinks highly of the 964: “It did represent a major redesign of the philosophy and for the first time included features such as coil spring suspension, ABS and power assisted steering. These features all improved the 964’s driving behavior. The 964 consigned the earlier models to the ‘classic’ era.

“The new all-wheel drive system was a major development and despite its heaviness, gave the 911 a new sure footedness and turned it into an excellent tourer.”

This example has been given several performance upgrades over time, evidently with a no-expense-spared approach. The engine is now a 3.8lt flat six matched to a five-speed manual transmission.

The Healey Factory in Melbourne has it, priced at $279,000.
