1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL – today’s luxo tempter

Long-wheelbase limo

Back when this car was new, it cost the rough equivalent of a house in a good inner metropolitan neighborhood. It was the preserve of the wealthy.

For some, this W126 series Mercedes-Benz is among the last of what enthusiasts call “the bank vault Benzes” – that is, from a time when keeping the price down wasn’t such a big consideration as making the thing close to bulletproof.

The 560 in long-wheelbase SEL form offers significantly more cabin room than a standard SE, with a taller turret and the extra length devoted to the rear seat passengers. Because of that, the car will comfortably seat four 6-foot-plus (183cm-plus) people with room to spare.

It’s powered by a big lazy 5.6lt V8 with a four-speed auto.

This example is with John Conroy in Brisbane and claims a full-service history at $34,990.
