1989 Holden Commodore VN SS – Todays Tempter

Future Classic? We’d say it’s already well on its way

Just five years ago, we had Joe Kenwright write home about why the VN SS makes sense as a future classic.

It was a capable and proper sports sedan with Holden’s then-new uprated 5.0lt V8 yielding 165kW at 4400rpm, and 15kg lighter than the entry-level EA Falcon six-pack.

Mechanically, the powertrain was smooth as butter – and refined too; setting a new benchmark for V8 fuel economy at the time.

But years ago, when they were cheap and underrated they were already getting thin on the ground.  Now, they’re not so cheap – and good examples are even scarcer.

The recent surge of Aussie V8s had seen a significant revival of interest for the modern classic VN SS; and will remain a popular attraction at any All Holden day for years to come. But buying a basket-case and going the resto-route is a costly exercise, and will likely leave you out of pocket if you’re forced to sell. It’s almost always smarter to buy a car with as much work already done as possible.

The Atlas Grey 1989 VN SS on sale here might be a good candidate to look at.

It’s a factory five-speed manual and is described by the seller as a “clean and much loved car”.

It’s coated in new 2pak paint and decals, carried out 12 months ago; and the interior is said to be original and in very good condition.

The car has also recently had all fluids changed and new brakes fitted.

With 185,747kms on the odo, the car is listed at $35,500 (*or nearest offer).

The VN SS is based in Queensland, and you can check out the full listing here!
