1989 Holden Commodore VN Berlina – Todays Bargain Tempter

Big bang for buck

The VN Holden Commodore was the first iteration of the second generation of the iconic Aussie-made marque.

Produced between August 1988 and August 1991, the VN Commodore replaced the outgoing VL, and brought with it major changes over its predecessor.

Based off a new platform that was the amalgamation of the European market Opel Omega and Opel Senator, the looked vastly different from its older Commodore siblings as well as more generous proportions to help it compete against its arch nemesis, the Ford Falcon.

Power came from a choice of three different engines; a 2.0lt inline four-cylinder, a Buick-sourced 3.8lt V6 and the venerable Aussie-made 5.0lt V8.

Shove from the aforementioned donks was sent to the rear wheels via either a five-speed Borg-Warner T-5 manual or a four-speed HydraMatic automatic transmission.

Body types that the VN was made available to customers in comprised a four-door sedan, four-door wagon or a two-door ute.

There were a number of trim specifications that customers could option their VN with, and these included the Executive, S, SS, Berlina and Calais.

This particular VN is a ’89 Berlina with the 5.0lt V8 and four-speed automatic transmission and, according to the seller, the vehicle has travelled an original 220,000 kilometres from new.

The seller adds that this is a clean, country driven two-owner vehicle with a rust-free body.

The VN Berlina is $6900 and anyone interested in this classic Aussie V8 can view the full listing here.
