1987 Porsche 944 Turbo – Todays Tempter

Once Porsche’s middle-child, they’re now the last bastion of affordable Stuttgart ownership

Porsche’s front-engined coupes were long thought of as the orphans and middle-children while their 911-badged stablemates stole the limelight.

With the runaway boom of air-cooled 911s though, Porsche’s ‘entry-level’ models now represent the last bastion of (relative) affordable Stuttgart ownership.

They’ve always been astounding cars, with prices solidly on the rise in the wake of the 911’s stratospheric rise.

When the 944 arrived in 1982, it was much-improved over the preceding 924.

It had near-50/50 weight distribution, full disc brakes and an increased track and width; making it a capable bit of kit in the corners.

The 944 Turbo landed in Australian showrooms in 1986, and set you back $115,000 when new – double the standard naturally aspirated 944. The power delivery was praised as reminiscent of early turbo 911s, with peak torque hitting you at 4000rpm and an addictive surge from as low as 2500rpm.

This 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo photoigraphs well in white duco over black leather interior.

It looks to be in good condition both outside and in, with an aftermarket steering wheel and stereo head unit in place inside the cabin.

Outside, the car sits on genuine Fuchs wheels, though the listing stipulates that the standard wheels will come with the car too.

It’s said to have recently had a major service, replacing timing belts and pulleys; with an engine overhaul taking place in 2014 – the seller states that the car has travelled less than 5000kms since then.

The car is based in Western Australia and is listed for $46,990.
