Surviving R31s are getting uncommon these days, but here’s one
Add the R31 Skyline to the list of cars that you just don’t seem to see anymore; but back in the 80s it was Nissan Australia’s champion of the market, and a genuine rival to the six-cylinder Commodore and Falcons.
Locally manufactured, Australia missed out on the desirable two-door coupe and pillarless four-door hardtops of the Japanese market, with only sedans and wagons being sold through dealerships.
Mainstream Australian-spec Skylines were fitted with the naturally-aspirated single-overhead cam EFI RB30, and missed out on the Japanese-spec’s coil-sprung independent rear suspension in favour of a more durable (and less costly) BorgWarner live axle.
Trim levels ranged from the standard GX and GXE, as well as the luxury-oriented Ti and sporty Silhouette. Regardless of trim level, all power output was a uniform 117kW across the range and was shifted through either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.
They were fairly well-equipped at the time too, with four-wheel disc brakes across the range, and power steering. Silhouette and Ti models gained 15″ wheels while the GX and GXE made do with 14″s.
This 1987 Australian-built example presents in the upmarket Ti specification and is described by the seller as “original”. The odometer reads 189,155 which is very low for the age, and these cars.
The seller states that the car has always been garaged and is currently unregistered.
There aren’t many photos at all to inspect unfortunately, however the car looks to be intact and probably the most affordable way into an 80s Australian-made family car.
The car’s based in New South Wales and is listed for $5,000.
