1985 Jaguar XJ6 – today’s classic Brit tempter

One of the greats

It may not be a universal view, but Jaguar XJ6s – particularly the early Series I through to Series III – should rate as one of the all-time great four-door saloons.

Lon,g low and elegant lines are matched by what was at launch in 1968 serious performance, very tidy handling and a superb ride.

These cars performed as a true grand tourer, though they were sometimes let down by quality control issues.

By Series 3 (which is what this example is) the body had been through a subtle styling update by Pininfarina, plus some major mechanical upgrades, such as fuel-injection for the 4.2lt inline six.

That powerplant was good for around 151kW (200hp) and was usually matched to a three-speed auto. Manuals were built, but are rare.

Quality control had been largely sorted by this stage. See our archived buyer guide.

This example claims low mileage (81,000km) and is running wire wheels – an expensive option. Located in NSW, it’s priced at $24,000.
