1985 HDT VK Calais Director: Reader Ride

Black beauty

My VK Director is one of just a handful of cars ever made in the Tuxedo Black with the five-speed T5G manual gearbox, and it’s had all the options ticked.

The car’s been kept mostly stock, however, I have added the 8.5-inch wide Corvettes, which I reckon fill out the guards a bit better than the standard 16×7 wheels.

The motor’s also been warmed up a bit, and the engine bay isn’t exactly standard, but I’ve got all the original bits back at home in the garage, so if I want to change it back, I can.

It’s a great car to drive, the V8 is such a charmer, and it gets a hell-of-a-lot of looks whenever I drive it.

Funny thing is, when I was first looking at this car about 14-years ago, it was actually my second pick, my first choice was a blue Group A Group Three down in Victoria.

But when I came down to have a look at the car, it turned out to be an absolute pig!

So, I ended up buying the Director, and you know what, it’s probably one of the best choices I’ve ever made.
