Future-proof classic Benz coupe; increasingly desirable model
If you’re after a classic car that blends style, build quality, pedigree, and most importantly, value; it’s hard to go past the W126-generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The ‘Sonderklasse’, or ‘Special Class’ badge was bestowed upon the Three-Pointed Star’s flagship model whose reputation was built upon luxury, technical innovation and built quality.
The W126 was the second-generation of the nameplate and was produced from 1979 until 1991 in both short and long-wheelbase sedan bodies, as well as this handsome pillarless coupe.
Initially, engines consisted of mostly inline-sixes with a few V8s, backed by a four-speed automatic. Their mechanical durability is well known and well proven, with this era of Benz known to live a very long life with nothing more than standard sympathetic servicing.
Replacement parts may be a little dearer than a more mainstream vehicle, but much of the servicing work can be performed by your friendly neighbourhood mechanic. They were advanced for the era, but are somewhat simple by today’s standards.
This silver coupe would’ve carried an eye-watering pricetag when it rolled off the showroom back in 1984.
It seems to be mistakenly listed in our classifieds as an “S-Class 500”, although we are writing under the assumption that it is a ‘500SEC’, as per the nomenclature for this generation.
That means, it’s got the bigger of the two V8s, a fuel-injected 5.0lt compared to the 380SEC’s 3.8lt unit.
The seller has attached only one photo unfortunately, but states that the car is good, honest, tidy and reliable.
They indicate that the car is a two-owner example with 157,791kms on the odometer.
“Looks and drives well”, they say.
Albeit with not a huge amount more to go off, it looks to be a good example of an increasingly desirable model. These ‘youngtimer’ Benzes are coming into their own as of late, with coupes in particular picking up steam.
On paper at least, this is a seriously tempting cruiser for the future.
The big Benz coupe is based in Queensland, and is listed for $18,000.
