Ex-Street Machine Winner! Top to bottom build of the highest caliber
A time-capsule car of yesteryear’s show scene, this WB ute was top-judged Street Machine in 1989, and was featured in our sister magazine in the April/May issue of the same year.
Almost thirty years later, the car still looks exactly as it did when making the rounds of the Australian show circuit, having spent much of the past few decades tucked away in the garage, and under a tarp – according to Street Machine’s 2016 feature.
Outside, the car received a Caprice front end, and the entire body was smoothed, and coated with two-coats of Indigo two-pack and five coats of clear. The undercarriage was painted in candy apple red, and the bed received an incredibly detailed Jarrah wood overlay.
The original 253 was ditched for a 308 with Yekka Terra heads, roller rockers, custom Crow Cam, Edelbrock manifold and a 650 Holley. All dashed in chrome with red and gold details.
Inside the cabin sees a wall-to-wall overhaul, outfitted in cream velour with Commodore SL/E seats and GTS dash.
A build of this calibre would likely see the receipts tally up far north of the $81,000 listed price.
This WB ute is an iconic piece of Australian custom culture, with plenty of hardware to show for it: Top Ute at the ’88 Street Machine Nationals, and Top Vehicle at the ’88 Victorian Street Machine Show. In ’89 along with receiving Top Judged Street Machine at Summernats, the WB also picked up Top Commercial Interior and Top Ute.
With only 74372 kms listed, the car represents a well-kept and perfectly preserved piece of a bygone show era.
