1984 BMW 635 – today’s tempter

Euro GT

BMW’s ‘shark snout’ E24 was a hugely expensive car when first introduced to the local market in 1977 and remained so throughout its long retail life.

Numerous variants were produced though the overall Paul Bracq body shape remained much the same across a decade.

In a feature on the series, one of our staffers (who is also an owner) notes: “They’re fairly heavy (around 1500kg) and they’re not tyre-smoking fast in the traditional sense. Think more grand tourer than sports car. However you can get along at a good pace and they’re not completely embarrassed on a set of corners. Four-wheel discs, halfway decent suspension and a reasonable amount of grip means they’re a pretty trustworthy thing when you’re barreling across unfamiliar territory. Meanwhile, they’re a comfortable distance hauler.”

The 3.4lt straight six engine is good for around 164kW (220hp) in standard trim.

This 635 is a ‘series 2’ five-speed manual and comes with factory BBS period wheels. It’s predecessor, the E9, is now commanding serious money and we’re seeing prices firm up in these.

It’s with the Healey Factory in Melbourne at $35,000.
