Subaru’s launch into the local market gained plenty of interest and, by the time this second-generation Leone was launched in 1979, it was a reasonably established brand that was to rely heavily on rallying to make its mark.
One of the glamour models of this line-up was the 4WD RX Turbo, which earned trophies around the world.
Our brief story on that car notes: “Australian rallying changed from loud and sideways to silent and sophisticated, when the Turbo won two National and several State rally titles.”
This version is more of a budget-friendly offering with a normally-aspirated 1.8lt flat-four engine, five-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive.
While it may be humble and arguably a project, we suspect it would be welcome at any Japanese classic-themed gathering.
It’s in Invergowrie, NSW, priced at $4200.
