Cheap French oddball! And certainly the nicest Fuego we’ve come across
Renault coupe offerings pre-1980s weren’t the most inspiring things, with Renault 15 and 17 series cars derived from the Renault 12 of 1969.
The Fuego of 1980 was a new sports-inspired two-door which Renault made great efforts to combine modern styling and technical refinement. It was tremendously aerodynamic – even by today’s standards – and could comfortably seat 4-5
Based off the newer Renault 18; the front running gear was binned in exchange for the Renault 20 Diesel’s underpinnings; including a compact stub axle with greater negative camber, as well as a new power-assisted steering system.
Engine options included various four-cylinders ranging from 1.4lts to 2.0lts.
The Fuego GTX was the top of the range model, gaining the 2.0lt OHC unit with electronic ignition. They bore either an optional three-speed auto or a four-speed manual (five-speed post-1982) as standard.
This ’83 Fuego GTX is fitted with the five-speed manual and looks to be a great example of this oddball French coupe. It’s said to have no rust with the body and interior in good shape.
