Affordable ‘youngtimer’ driver’s classic: Bahama Beige beaut!
Everyone wants the straight-six E30, for fair reasons: BMW sixes are rightly legendary. But if you’re after a cheap driver’s car that you can stick on Club Plates, many Bavarian faithfuls stipulate that the smaller four-cylinder E30s offer a better driving experience with less weight over the front axle, and a more rev-happy powerplant.
The E30 was a tractable and tactile little unit, with independent rear suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. They’re a lauded collectible that offers plenty of thrills and won’t break the bank when speaking of lower-spec vehicles.
They won’t win many traffic light Grands Prix, but take the windy way home and, trust us, it’ll all come together.
This 1983 E30 318i is a tantalising proposition; specified with the 1.8lt four-cylinder M10 and desirably mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The car is finished in Bahama Beige metallic over cream cloth trim and presents well from what we can visually discern through photos in the listing.
The paint looks like it has decent shine to it, while many other E30s are beginning to flake and fade. The interior too looks very neat for its age, though we can’t quite see under the sheep skins and dash mat.
Overall, it presents as a sensible buy if you’re in the market for a peppy little runabout: coupe body without sunroof, manual option and clean original-looking condition with 160,733kms travelled.
The car is based in Tasmania and is listed for $8,200.
