Desirable classic Alfa coming from long-term ownership: low-kms, mechanically sound
Alfa Romeo’s cult classic GTV6 was born of the mid-70s two-door hatchback Alfetta lineage, which began life with a twin-cam 1.8lt which wasn’t exactly deemed a huge improvement to the old 105 Series’ 2.0lt unit.
In 1977 the 1.8lt unit made way for a larger 2.0lt motor, and while the car boasted rack and pinion steering, independent rear suspension, the early year cars were deemed to be “nervous” handlers and had a few niggling issues in regards to weak gearboxes.
1980 saw the GTV6 arrive, with an even larger 2.5lt engine, along with a stronger differential, gearbox and drive-shafts. The GTV6 could be distinguished by the bonnet air-intake and 15″ alloy wheels. They were frequently seen on the grid at the pointy end of Australian and European Touring Car events and was the last RWD car to win the Australian Rally Championship in 1987.
This 1983 GTV6 comes to market after 22 years of continuous and loving ownership.
The sellers seem to be genuine oddball enthusiasts (judging from the Fiat Coupe Turbo pictured in the background), who describe the car to be in “mechanically sound” condition.
The state the car could use a little TLC in regards to minor body and paint work, and interior – but is overall intact and in running condition.
The odometer currently sits at 48,450kms – but with only a five-digit odometer, the sellers suspect that the car has gone around the clock once and likely bears 148,450kms on the chassis.
The little GTV6 had an engine rebuild in the mid-2000s with works carried out to the heads and rings in particular.
It might be a minor project in the end, but should appeal to any passionate Alfa Romeo owners not afraid of a little elbow grease as top-end examples of these can reach upwards of $40,000.
This little Alfetta is listed for $19,500 and is based in Tasmania.
