Aussie-assembled classic Toyota wagon: new paint, windscreen and more
While the sixth-generation T130 Corona landed in Japanese Toyota Showrooms in 1978; they were also actually manufactured here from 1979 until 1983.
The new Corona retained its basic front-engined/rear-drive layout, packaged in a distinctly more modern boxy body available in four-door sedan, five-door liftback (post-1980) and station wagon, or unusual two-door hardtop guise.
To achieve 85% local parts content within manufacturing, Coronas built by Toyota Australia utilised Holden’s lamented 1.9lt Starfire – with modified camshaft, manifold and carburettor.
The Corona enjoyed a global facelift in 1980, but Australia wouldn’t see it until a year later. The Corona liftback was introduced here in 1980 however, and utilised Toyota’s superior imported 2.0lt 18RC engine.
Post 1981, Toyota further modified Holden’s Starfire donor engines with new gaskets, valves and springs, and water pump – while the range-topping Corona XX was fitted with the imported 2.0lt 21RC found in the Toyota Celica of the era.
Spotted on the market today is this 1981 Toyota Corona CS Station Wagon.
Unfortunately there isn’t a lot of information or photos in the full listing to go off, but it is indicated that the old Toyota has been treated to an “engine bay overhaul” and a respray; with new radiator, tyres, battery and windscreen fitted.
From the single photo attached, it certainly looks to be in tidy and well-cared for condition. We would assume it to be an Australian-made example with, in this spec, the Holden Starfire four. Although the listing cites its engine capacity as 1,998ccs – so it is possible that the car has been fitted with a period-correct Toyota motor.
It looks like a charming classic Japanese wagon that would look right at home rolling into one of the many annual All Japan days around the country. If you’re after a cheap and cheerful entry-level classic cruiser, this might be one to investigate.
The Corona wagon is based in New South Wales, and is listed for $5,300.
