Rare factory LHD V8 model, with 5-speed manual with good documentation and receipts
The 70s ‘wedge-shaped’ body of the TR7/8 was a marked departure for Triumph.
It’s a pure lightweight British sports car, with an overall length of just 406cm, a wheelbase of 216cm and can overall weight of 1200kgs (for the TR8 V8 model).
The 3.5lt V8-powered TR8 was often described as the ‘English Corvette’ and, when introduced in 1978, was solely offered with a five-speed manual transmission.
The Rover V8 was capable of 99kW in the carburetted version; and for the fuel-injected unit – factory brochures of the period pegged the power output at 110kW.
On top of the V8 donk, the TR8 received better brakes, a revised 3.08:1 axle ratio, battery relocation to the boot, alloy wheels and leather steering wheel and a few trim changes.
The 1980 Triumph TR8 here is an overseas factory V8 model, which is rarely found in Australia.
It still remains in its native left-hook configuration, and overall seemingly original condition.
Finished in gold with tartan/brown interior; the car presents well and includes plenty of documentation including import approval and thousands of dollars in receipts.
Triumph’s 70s sports cars offer a purist’s driving appeal and have a passionate cult following. This is a rare example of an already in-demand affordable classic.
The car is available via Undercover Cars in Queensland, and is listed for $15,500.
