1980 Toyota Celica RA40 – today’s tempter

Liftback cruiser

With the prices of first-gen Celicas reaching for the sky, it’s natural that attention has swung around to later versions, such as the RA40 series.

That platform was produced as both a notchback coupe and liftback, in two generations. The first up to 1979 had round headlights and chrome bumpers, while the second is as you see here.

Mechanically they’re simple and bulletproof, with this version running the 18R 2.0lt four and three-speed auto transmission. The temptation may be there to convert it to manual – something you could argue either way.

We have also seen local owners tackle some pretty successful restorations of this series.

In any case older Celicas such as this have developed a strong following and should do okay over the long term, so long as you buy at a sensible price.

This one claims no rust and generally appears to be in good shape. Located to the west of Sydney, it’s on the market for $12,000.
