1978 Holden HZ Ute – Todays Tempter

HZ Sandman tribute: factory 253 V8 car, fitted with 355ci stroker and M21 four-speed

Holden’s HZ-range of cars arrived late in 1977 and marked the last of the traditional large-sized Lions.

The big news was the transformative new ‘Radial Tuned Suspension’, which greatly improved handling especially in comparison to preceding generations.

The model range was simplified too, with the base Belmont spec dropped in favour of a new and more luxurious Kingswood SL trim. Statesmans, Sandmans and Premiers were also available for buyers, as well as basic utilities and – of course – the Monaro GTS.

This example began life as a basic HZ ute, reportedly as a factory L32 4.2lt V8 and M20 four-speed manual car.

Since then, it has been turned into a sweet-looking Sandman tribute, with a 355ci stroker V8 now taking pride of place under the bonnet, backed by an M21 four-speed manual with power steering.

A full black Sandman interior appears inside the cabin, along with GTS dash and steering wheel.

The HZ ute presents well in the attached photos, and might be worth a look for anyone after a tough and useable weekend cruiser.

The Sandman lookalike is based in New South Wales and is listed for $35,000.
