1978 Holden HZ Kingswood – Todays Tempter

HZ Panelvan Sandman Tribute: 5.0lt V8, four-speed manual, original interior

The HZ of 1977 represented the last of the breed: the zenith of the Kingswood range which remains beloved and dearly missed to many.

Holden actually considered continuing the full-size Kingsy past the HZ, and we can only imagine where the lineage would have gone from there.

The HZ distinguished itself from its predecessors with its proud factory ‘Radial Tuned Suspension’. And with it, the Kingswood instantly went from a car with chronic understeer to a well sorted bit of kit that went where you pointed it and cornered comparatively flat.

It was once criticised for being a basic and simple package, but these days we reckon that’s part of the charm. They’re simple, relatively easy to maintain, and were built to last. There’s also a wealth of parts and mechanical knowledge out there to assist owners in keeping these old jiggers on the road.

This 1978 HZ Panelvan has been given the Sandman tribute treatment, and looks the goods!

Under the bonnet sits a 5.0lt V8 coupled with a four-speed manual.

The car has 188,891kms on it and is dipped in beige acrylic paint over a very original looking brown saddle interior.

It’s been lowered and tinted for some added presence, and overall looks like a very presentable and useable classic weekend workhorse!

The car is based in New South Wales and is listed for $24,990.
