Lovely top-spec Fairlane; used sparingly over past 15 years, only for club runs
The ZH Fairlane represented a return to form for Ford’s once-dominant position within the full-size luxury car segment.
From a 50% market share high, Ford’s big Fairlane fell to 27% by the time the ZH generation arrived in 1976.
Ford’s response was to take the XC Falcon architecture and graft generous amounts of extra sheet-metal to either end; influenced by US design at the time where size equalled luxury.
The ZH was big and bold, with improved standard equipment, which saw it gain radial tyres, a limited slip differential, rear disc brakes and intermittent wipers.
The model range too was further rationalised; with the 500 model taking place of the standard ‘custom’, and the Marquis occupying the upmarket offering with air-conditioning, power windows and twin “lounge seats” up front as standard.
This 1977 ZH Fairlane presents in top-spec Marquis trim; and is fitted with the 4.9lt V8.
It’s covered 289,500kms in its life, but certainly doesn’t show it in the photos.
It would appear that most of those Ks have been racked up earlier in its life; as the seller states that the car has only been used for club runs for the past 15 years.
When not out on club events, the car remains garaged and is regularly serviced, according to the seller.
There isn’t much other information in the listing unfortunately, but judging from the photos – the car is incredibly well cared for.
The big Ford Fairlane might be worth a look for anyone after their own slice of local large luxury.
