Seventies American style
Cadillac’s Eldorado of this period was one of the last before the name found itself attached to a far more compact car. So this is one of the last of the giant land yachts.
In our feature on the series we note: “Ever since 1958, when Ford’s four-seat Thunderbird established the ‘personal car’ genre, every manufacturer worth its sales stats wanted some of the action. Cadillac’s entrant was a long time in the making but very much worth the wait. Being a Cadillac, the Eldorado needed to use one of the company’s own engines and the long-serving 429 cubic-inch (7.0-litre) V8 was adapted to sit alongside the three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic.”
Specs of course changed over the years, however the basic formula of a giant V8 (they grew to 8.0lt at one stage) tied to an auto remained. We’d expect this car to be running a later 7.0lt V8 with three-speed auto.
Though arguably a little over-the-top for some tastes, there is no question they have a strong following and provide that unique ‘floating on air’ ride as you cruise down the highway.
The mechanical package is notoriously strong and reliable.
This example is in Brisbane with John Conroy Motors at $39,990.
