Rare original six-pack SL/R is a standout amongst flared V8 clones
When you think of SL/R Toranas, most of us immediately think of the big SL/R 5000 and flared fire breathing L34s.
The range-topping SL/R in its day actually came standard with the 3.3lt 202ci six-cylinder engine: though those surviving examples over bygone decades frequently fell victim to drop tanks, flared arches and V8 swaps; rendering surviving SL/R six-packs extremely thin on the ground – when was the last time you saw one?
The Sport Luxury/Racing package gained you a black grille, rear panel, rocker panel and window trims, as well as front disc brakes, front and rear anti-roll bars; plus a sports steering wheel and full instrumentation. All with a four-speed manual gearbox.
The SL/R 3300 sold for $5798 in its day, with the SL/R 4.2 V8 costing $6485, and the most popular SL/R 5000 ballooned to a sticker price of $6885.
This stunning LX Torana SL/R 3300 is up for auction (Lot 74) at Shannons’ upcoming Melbourne Winter sale. Estimated to land between $35,000 and $45,000 with No Reserve.
Finished in Aquarius (Code 1914), with Chamois trim; the car is in fantastic and largely original and overall excellent condition, after repainted in 2007.
It’s remained in the same family ownership for the past 41 years – and has covered just 34,370kms, documented in its original GM-H Maintenance booklet.
The car was fitted with under-dash air-conditioning by the dealer, stamped with its warranty card stamped 17/01/1977 – and is fitted with period NILRIST electrostatic field rust-proofing under the bonnet.
The car also bears an original set of Holden accessory mudflaps, and looks like a total time-warp example of an ever-increasingly rare vehicle.
The car has always been garaged and comes with a full set of books, including: original Owner’s Manual, service books and service history.
The LX Torana SL/R 3300 will cross the block next Monday, July 15, at Shannons’ Melbourne Winter Classic Car auction. Inspection is available Monday-Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm; or on the weekend prior to the auction 9:00am-4:00pm on the Saturday, and 10:00am-4:00pm on the Sunday.
