Local luxury
Things were very different in this country when this car was produced. Holden and Ford – and to a lesser extent Chrysler – were locked in a titanic battle that included the big luxury car market. In many respects, local buyers had it good.
In a feature on this generation Statesman we noted: “You can easily imagine the internal struggle someone might go through when presented with the choice between Fairlane and Statesman.
“Both were popular with business owners, commercial travellers and anyone who had (or wanted) to rack up long miles in a big comfortable car that wasn’t going to let them down. So Holden and Ford made sure the choice wasn’t easy.”
The HX represented incremental improvement over the original HQ series and in Caprice form offered a number of upgrades over the basic package.
Mechanicals were well-proven and in this case we’re talking of a 308ci (5.0lt) V8 with three-speed Turbo 400 auto transmission.
Over time, surprisingly few of these cars survived and this example is a rare survivor that appears to be in very good shape. It’s currently in a collection in Perth and is being handled by Australian Muscle Car Sales. Price is $58,500.
