1976 Chrysler Valiant VK Charger 770 – Todays Tempter

Lightly fettled Charger 770 Hardtop running original 265 Hemi-six and three-speed

Chrysler’s VK landed in October 1975, and was gone within a year.

At the time, Australia’s motoring climate was tumultuous with buyer’s shying away from big cars in the face of soaring fuel prices.

Chrysler famously had no money (or so it claimed) to spend on the VK, so distinguishing the new VK was largely thanks to a new grille and some body embellishments – as well as a multi-function column stalk and inertia-reel seatbelts.

Given their ill-timed arrival, and short-lived appearance in showrooms, good VKs survive in relatively low numbers these days; especially a high-spec hardtop like this.

This 1976 VK Valiant Charger 770 Hardtop presents in Amarante Red with original 265ci Hemi-six and three-speed auto.

The 265 has been rebuilt with a 465 Holley carburettor, four-barrel manifold, Pacemaker headers, MSD ignition, solid lifters and Yella Terra roller rockers.

The gearbox is also the original three-speed BorgWarner unit, but has undergone a full service and is fitted with a 2800 stall. The car also features a high-torque starter motor, reconditioned brake booster and master cylinder, as well as a new fuel pump, four new tyres and brake pads.

Overall, the car presents fantastically both outside and in: it’s covered a genuine 337,961kms from new with just 4,181kms covered since the engine rebuild in July 2016.

The current owner purchased the car in 2006, and the car comes with original 770 wheel arch chrome trims and chrome sill plates. Receipts for the engine rebuild will be included in the sale.

The car is based in Brisbane and is listed for $46,000.
