1975 NSU Ro 80 – Todays Oddball Tempter

Straight out of left field

The NSU Ro 80 is a German made, rotary powered, four-door sedan that was built between 1967 and 1977.

The Ro was styled by the legendary designer Claus Luthe, the same man that penned the BMW E30 3-Series and the E28 5-Series.

Thanks to time spent in a wind tunnel during its design process, the 80 had a remarkably low drag coefficient of just 0.355, which was very impressive for a four-door sedan of the era.

The 995cc twin-rotor Wankel engine produced 84kW and that power was sent to the front wheels via a three-speed semi-automatic transmission.

Due to its unique design and innovative advancements, the Ro was actually voted Car of the Year in 1968.

Commercially, the Ro 80 sold just over 37,000 units in total in its ten year life span, although models are fairly thin on the ground these days.

This particular Ro 80 is a ’75 model and, according to the owner, has travelled a mere 62,992 kilometres from new.

The seller adds that this is a barn-find example and has been in storage in Bayside Melbourne since the mid-1980s.

The Ro 80 is $7,800 and anyone interested in this truly fascinating car can view the full listing here
