1974 Ford Falcon XB GS ute – Todays Tempter

Originally delivered with ‘Overniter’ camper option: 4.9lt V8, column auto, in excellent condition

There’s just something about the X-series ute…

The load bed was based off the wagon, but its wheelbase was extended to the full 2946mm of the Fairlane leaving room in the cabin aplenty and avoiding the awkwardly long overhangs of its US-based cousin, the Ranchero. Coupled with the two-door coupe’s swooping roofline, and the longer coupe doors; the proportions were bang on, making for one of the most handsome and capable load-haulers around.

For the XB of 1974, the range gained front disc brakes and intertia-reel seatbelts; along with a healthy dose of Mustang-inspired styling and a new power bulge was massaged into the bonnet.

This XB ute was factory optioned with the GS Rally pack, and the rare ‘Overniter’ camper option which appeared in Ford’s leisure range of vehicles, alongside the Panelvan-based ‘Surferoo’ and ‘Surfsider’.

While the bed-mounted ‘Overniter’ camper is no longer with the vehicle; the rest of the car presents as advertised in the brochure: 4.9lt V8, three-speed column-shift auto, bucket seats with console, driving lights, extra cooling package, heavy duty shock absorbers, alternator and battery; power-assisted front brakes and towing mirrors.

According to the listing, the car is in excellent rust-free condition throughout. It’s in thoroughly original condition with all working GS instrumentation, GS steering wheel, talk horn and factory radio/cassette player in place.

The car is showing a reported 168,000kms on the odometer, complementing its overall well-kept condition.

We’re not sure how hard it would be to track down the camper for the bed, but it stands alone as a stunning classic Aussie ute.

It’s based in New South Wales, and is listed for $38,500.
