1974 BMW 2002 Turbo replica – Todays Tempter

Ultimate driving machine!

The BMW 2002 was born of BMW’s ‘New Class’ compact sedans in the 60s.

A pivotal time for the marque, struggling to remain in business in post-war Germany, the line began with the 1500 in 1961.

The 1500 was a major turning point for the brand who had struggled throughout the 50s following the war and the European financial Crisis. The 1500 was a commercial success and allowed BMW to pay its shareholders a dividend for the first time in two decades.

Though critical to their survival, to this day the 1500 is largely overshadowed by its smaller and more nimble cousin, the 1600-02.

The 1600-02, later known as the 1602, debuted in 1966 and had a modest 1.6lt M10, but was of a unibody construction, had independent rear suspension and MacPherson front struts.

Legend has it that both the designer of the original four-cylinder M10 engine, and BMW’s then-Director of Product Planning had both independently fitted their personal 1602s with larger 2.0lt units. When their paths crossed, they joined forces and pitched to the board what would eventually become the BMW 2002.

This 2002 has been with its current owner for two years, and he states that for half of that time, it was undergoing its rebuild to its current state.

Restored by Bavarian Engineering in Sydney, the car has a rebuilt motor with no kilometres on it yet.

The car has undergone bare-metal rust repairs and is fitted with the full 2002 Turbo body kit including wide over-fenders, air dam and boot spoiler, all finished in BMW Calypso Red.

The original black interior has been retrimmed with new carpet, roof liner as well as a retrimmed original centre console. The instrument cluster has also been refreshed in matching red paint, and the units changed from miles to kilometres.

The car currently sits on 15×7.0 Lenso mesh wheels but will come with original 13″ Alpina wheels.

This is a comprehensive top-bottom build replicating one of the most celebrated German driver’s cars in history.

The car is listed for $65,000, though you can bet a lot more has been tipped into it.

The car is based in NSW, and is being sold as the owner has been moved to Melbourne for work.
